Frozen Evolution Rethinks Darwin's Theory
|
Meet Jaroslav Flegr, professor of biology and author of "Frozen Evolution." His book is about to open the long-closed minds of science.
Darwinism, as an idea or theory, is quite familiar to us all. But here lies the difference.
Each of us, scientist and non-scientist, has his own "spin" or interpretation or what evolution really is and how it works.
Flegr writes with clarity and historical perspective on how science and society have interpreted and applied the principles of Darwinism in the context of the decade in which we lived.
Caution. The changes in interpretation and application of Darwinism throughout history does not necessarily mean each new generation progressed, in any meaningful way, the theory of evolution.
In other words, change means "different," but different does always mean "better."
As a result, the book is aptly titled, "Frozen Evolution" and the author offers up the notion of "evolutionary pluralism." Much like a grand theory encompassing all nuances of evolutionary thought.
This unique approach to historical Darwinism attempts to view evolution from "outside the box" of evolution itself.
The notion of evolutionary pluralism advances science closer to an all-encompassing, grand theory of evolution. Not just Darwin's evolution, but all notions of evolution itself.
The author offers the reading as an invitation to young people, our future scientific community, to reconsider evolution as a pluralistic theory.
Written for intellectually curious students bored with their science professor's single-minded, absolute allegiance to Darwin's outdated, tiresome theory of evolution.
The reading reminded me of a quote by songwriter Paul Simon, "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all." Frozen Evolution will
help young minds break the ice from our frozen theory and open a new era of progress in evolutionary science.
Thought-provoking ideas. Compelling insights. Opens the mind and sweeps out the cobwebs.
Dr. Jaroslav Flegr is Professor of Science, Charles University in Prague. He is also author of the textbook, Evolutionary Biology (Academia, Praha 2005). The Czech language version
of his Frozen Evolution was nominated for "Book of the Year" and received the prestigious award for literature, Magnesia Litera.
